Aps 2023-2024 Calendar – The Alamogordo School Board approved the 2022-2023 school calendar at its regular meeting on April 20.
The 2022-2023 school calendar is different from recent years. After New Mexico's 2022 legislative session, Alamogordo Public Schools will learn they can opt out of the Extended Learning Time and K5+ programs, said Alamogordo Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Pamela Renters.

"The decision of the calendar committee here under the advice of (APS Superintendent) Dr. (Kenneth) Moore we will not participate in (Extended Learning Time or K5+) this year," Renteria said.
K5+ is a program that allows students to volunteer for the start of school a few weeks before the start of the year.
Extended Learning Time, or ELT, adds 10 days to the school calendar as a way to close school opportunities.

Kindergarten, sixth grade and freshmen students start school one day earlier than their peers since they are starting a new school.
"We want (the students) to have a good welcome day, an important day for these students: going to a new school, a new environment, being theirs as usual," said Renteria. "We really want them to feel special that day and be able to do that exercise without a lot of people around."
Kindergarten, sixth grade and new students begin on Thursday, August 11 and end on May 25 and others including pre-K begin on August 12 and end on May 26.

"We've confirmed the calendar and appreciate the return starting in August and ending before Memorial Day," Hallbeck said. "We also believe that starting the transition years early is a good idea to prepare these students for new situations."
The 2021-2022 school calendar begins on August 6 and the last day of school is May 27.
