5 of 5 Franklin Sampson, CFISD's director of guidance and counseling, was recently elected to the Lone Star State School Counselor Association (LSSSCA) vice president's office.

The first day of the 2022-2023 school year is August 22 based on state legal guidelines. The calendar was developed in the fall of 2021 by a committee that included teachers, parents, community members and staff, according to a district news release.

Lone Star College-CyFair opens its library for tours to the public, allowing them to learn about the place and earn prizes.

Pop in your Library Tours program back to the LSC-CyFair library 24-27. January, February 31. February 3 and 7-10. Librarian-led tours will be 30 minutes or less and no registration is required. Participants can meet near the entrance of the LSC-CyFair Technology Building, and will have a chance to win.

"This three-week introductory tour is designed to reduce the barriers of library anxiety for students and community visitors," said Liz Nebeker, reference librarian, in a college press release. "The tour covers library resources and services available to help classroom and community projects succeed. Come learn 'what to do' in the library and meet the librarians who are 'expert resources' here to serve you.

Franklin Sampson, Cy-Fair ISD's director of guidance and counseling, was elected to the Lone Star State School Counselor Association Vice President's office.

"This will be an amazing opportunity and give me the chance to continue giving back to others," Sampson said in a press release. "I have made it part of my daily goal to do everything I can to make an impact in people's lives. Serving in this capacity will help our organization grow to greater heights. I have the unique position of overseeing nearly 300 school counselors, 19 social workers, four mental health intervention counselor and one substance use counselor.I will use my influence to continue to feed into this amazing association.

Cy-Fair ISD had 18 wrestlers win medals during the 19th CFISD Invitational January 7-8, including two individual champions.

Cypress Ranch High School girls wrestlers finished as the top-placed CFISD school, while the Cy Ranch boys had the top finish among all CFISD teams in the boys tournament.

Kahla Middle School students and staff held a Bears for the Blue drive, collecting new and used stuffed animals for the CFISD police department and other police departments.

According to a district press release, 160 stuffed animals were collected, and will be donated to children in need.

This drive was planned by Kahla in the class of paraprofessional Kelsey Jackson and secretary Dolores Frayler as an opportunity for students to help others. The drive starts on January 5th and ends on January 13th.

"This is a service project that gives back to the community," Jackson said. "I spoke to some economically disadvantaged children and heard them talk about giving their stuffed animals to others who really need them. They get something in return, but it's not real. It's doing a good act of service.

Election Day in November has become a student holiday for the district. However, students now also have the day before the November Election Day off, at least for the next two school years.

The Tomball ISD school board approved the instructional calendar for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years during its Feb. 8 meeting.

The district said in a news release that the decision to add the day before election day to the list of student holidays "is to help reduce the number of student absences that occur on this day in 2021."

Another feature of the new calendar noted by the district is the reduction of half a day. The last day of each semester will be only a half day of instruction for Tomball ISD students.

Due to the recent STAAR announcement, 2 late dates for secondary campuses have been removed (Thursday 4/20/23 and Thursday 4/27/23) as these dates are now in the state testing window. One has been added (Thursday 4/13/23) as it is currently outside the state testing window.

Elementary School Holiday/Employee Working Day on Monday 11/28/22 has been changed from Elementary Student/Employee Holiday to a normal day for elementary school students and staff. This change will allow more instructional minutes to accumulate so that, in the event of a brief closure for inclement weather, school may not have to be made up on another day because the additional minutes will be "moved".
