School Year Calendar / Upcoming School Year Calendar

In the absence of two board members, the Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year by a 6-1 vote at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer break and instead have two weeks off during the fall and spring semesters. One week of each term will be a tutoring week, which will give students who need academic support access to it.

Revised Calendar for the 2023-24 School Year Students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. The fall holiday is scheduled for October 2-13, and October 2-6 is the week of intercession. Thanksgiving holiday will be between November 22-24. The Christmas break for students is from 20 December 2023 to 3 January 2024. Spring Break is April 1-12 and Intervention Week is April 1-5, 2024. Last day of school is Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Other days off in the proposed calendar include Labor Day, September 4, 2023; Friday, October 20, weather make-up day; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15; Friday, February 16, 2024 and 2024 Holiday and President's Day on Monday, February 19; Weather Makeup Day, Thursday, March 28; Good Friday Holiday is Friday, March 29, 2024.

Board member Jason Crane was the only one who opposed the calendar. During the meeting, he reiterated his concerns about how the calendar could affect several programs including athletics, bands and the Gateway performing arts program.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting on Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that a shorter summer will affect athletics, teams and gates," Crane said after the meeting. "I'm sure the region will get through this, but I also feel it's a huge negative for us. My conscience votes for it."

Crane added that he supports the concept of a revised calendar, with only two weeks off each semester for him to stop.

"…I don't believe these breaks take two weeks," Crane said. "I think a week is enough, but the board voted for what we voted for, and I'm going to support that."

During the meeting, Aiken County Supervisor Lawrence King said band practice in the summer of 2023 will be difficult because there are typically three-week summer band camps. But band managers have plenty of options.

Lawrence noted that the state organizes competitions and that there are various school schedules throughout South Carolina. He also suggested setting up a week-long band camp in the summer and using the breaks for additional band camps.

"Yes, I used to have a three-week band camp in the summer, but what about having a one-week band camp in the summer and using those probation periods for additional band camps," Lawrence said. "There are two weeks of sports bands in the summer and another in the fall. I say people have to look at things differently and adapt to it."

As for sports schedules, Lawrence said competition schedules are set by the state, so it won't affect them too much. Routines have to be adjusted, especially summer routines and their timings.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely see (games) during the break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than having a basketball game during the Christmas break, or having a baseball and softball game during spring break."

Another concern is the success of the two-week treatment. Crane said he doesn't believe a two-week break will work, and he's heard other people feel the same way.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its Tuesday night meeting.

"We were able to allocate 30 minutes of intervention time for each of our days (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "In a small group setting, a 30-minute intervention is a very good and intensive intervention for our students… If we look at 5 hours a day during the intervention time, that's 10 times what they get on a normal school day. So , they earn 50 times as much over a five-day period as a normal school day. This week's intervention could be equivalent to a 50-day intervention of 30 minutes each during the school year."

"Everything we do for these students is designed to help them succeed next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we could have done a lot of good that week. We actually heard from a school district two weeks ago and saw results through a week of intervention."

For Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and they are working out how to achieve that. Possibilities he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in summer, 5 days in fall, or 5 days in fall and spring.
