In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer and instead have a two-week break in the fall and spring. One of the weeks in each semester will be remedial, allowing students who need academic help to receive it.

School Calendar / 2022 2023 School Calendar

The revised 2023-24 calendar calls for students to begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall break is scheduled for October. 2-13, where Oct. 2-6 as weeks of mediation. It will be in November. Thanksgiving break is the 22nd-24th. Christmas vacation for students will be on December 1. January 20, 2023. March 2024. Spring break will be April 1-12, and the week of prayer will be April 1-5, 2024. The last day of school is Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Other holidays in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; weather day Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. January 15; holiday and President's Day on Friday, Feb. 16 and Monday, February. 19, 2024; weather day Thursday, March 28; and the Good Friday holiday on Friday 29 March 2024.

Board member Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. At this meeting, he also expressed concern about how this calendar would affect many programs including Gateway's athletics, band and art programs.

Hisd Board Of Education Approves 2022 2023 Academic Calendar

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that the short summer … will affect athletics, band and Gateway," Crane said after the meeting. "I believe the county will do it, but I feel like it's very bad for us." I voted my conscience on this. "

Crane added that he supports a modified calendar, with only two weeks off each semester.

"… I'm not too sold on the fact that we need two weeks of those breaks," Crane said. "I think one week is enough, but the board voted for what we voted for and I support that going forward."

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Laurence said the summer of 2023 will be difficult for band programs because there are usually three weeks of summer band camp. But there are many options for band directors.

Laurence noted that the competition is regulated by the state and that there are different school schedules in South Carolina. He also suggested a one-week band camp in the summer and using the off-season for additional band camps.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2022-23 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"Well, normally you have a three-week band camp in the summer, but how about a one-week camp in the summer and use that time for extra camps," Laurence said. "Two weeks of band camp in the summer and one in the fall. I'm just saying people have to look at things differently and balance it out."

Regarding the athletes' schedules, Lawrence said that the competition schedules are set by the government, so they will not be affected much. Exercises must be adjusted, especially summer practices and their seasons.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely have (games) during the break," Laurence said. "It's not like basketball has events during Christmas break, baseball and softball have events during spring break."

Another concern expressed is how the two-week fix will work. Crane said he wasn't sure if the two-week break would be a good thing and had heard from other people who felt the same way.

"We are able to build 30 minutes of intervention into each of our days (during the school year)," Laurence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our students in a small group… If we look at a five-hour day in that intervention period, this is 10 times what they get in a regular school day. So for five days they get 50 times more than a normal school day. That one week of intervention can be equal to 50 days of intervention in a school year of 30 minutes each."

"Everything we do for those students is designed to help them succeed next term," Laurence said. "I think we can do a lot this week. In fact, a few weeks ago we heard from a school district that showed results with a one-week intervention. "

As for Gateway, Laurence said it takes 30 days and they are looking at how to make that 30 days. Possibilities he mentions include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After a year, everything is easier because you have an extra week," Laurence said. "An extra week isn't great, but that extra week gives you more flexibility in your summer planning."

President of the school board Dr. John Bradley said he had doubts about the revised calendar, but the fact that a majority of those polled supported it played a role in his decision to vote to adopt it.

"I'm going to vote for this knowing that we're creating a lot of problems for other people," Bradley said. "Sorry about that. But again, I feel we have to do what is available
