Depaul 2023-2024 Academic Calendar – The American Viola Society (AVS) hosted the 2022 AVS Festival and 47th International Viola Congress (IVC) at the Schwab School of Music, Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia, USA, June 1-5, 2022. The event welcomed violinists from all over the country . The World as a Community for the first time since 2019 and included almost 100 performances and presentations, as well as exhibitions, AVS competitions, the first mass commission of a viola ensemble, performances of modern violas and strings and more.

Kim Kashkashian and Timothy Ridout headlined the evening's performances, with Primrose 2021 winner Natalie Loughren and Isabelle Hagen as additional performers. Our festival and convention devotee was Manuel Diaz and our outstanding composer Sakari Dixon Vanderveer.

Yes, you read that right: UCLA posted an assistant position for a biochemist with a PhD and offered no compensation. While UCLA removed the post following the backlash, the unfortunate reality is that deals like this are not uncommon at a university that often expects Ph.D. Contract students and professors work for little or no pay. And now 70 percent of academics are full-time, part-time or adjunct teachers with little job security. This is a concern not only for those who work on campus, but also for undergraduates who are underpaid and overworked by professors who often do not provide them with the guidance and relationships they need.

Mark Riddle, the "mastermind" of the Varsity Blues scandal accused of taking SAT and ACT exams for students, will be sentenced today in federal court in Boston. He is expected to serve a lighter sentence because he has cooperated with authorities since pleading guilty in 2019.

Georgetown and Johns Hopkins renewed their indoor mask mandates this week after the latest spike in coronavirus cases. Students returning to Georgetown after Easter break later this month must also test negative before returning to campus. We took care of this ourselves as we are considering working face-to-face with students this summer, hopefully ordering masks won't be needed soon!

MIT said last week that the tests had indeed taken place when it returned to standardized testing.

Finally, we began to look at the performance of students who spent most of their high school years in distance learning. The answer is: not great. Students especially struggle in math and science classes, where the content is based directly on what students learned in high school. In addition to the challenges of online learning, passing grades at many schools means that students can "pass" challenging courses without actually mastering the material. We expect to continue to see these kinds of issues over the next few years as students progress from high school to college.

A number of highly selective (or, as many of our colleagues call them, "highly rejecting" schools) released their latest admissions decisions last night. It was absolutely crazy to look at the latest Kickstart College results, but keep in mind that these statistics are somewhat misleading as they represent a combination of results from multiple admissions programs. In other words, many of these schools admit more than 50% of their classes through mandatory early decision programs with higher acceptance rates.

Let's look at Vanderbilt: they had almost 2,700 ED I applicants, 2,400 ED II applicants; and 41,600 RD applicants, for a total of 46,717. According to Kickstart College, 2,864 students were accepted into the first class for an overall acceptance rate of 6%. Totally crazy, right? But it's worse. Of the 2,700 ED I applicants, 24.1% of students were accepted. Of the 2,400 ED II applicants, 10.3% of students were accepted. What about the 41,600 or so RD applicants? Approximately 1,964 acceptance letters were issued. This means that despite the published acceptance rate of 6%, the RD acceptance rate was actually 4.7%. For

Perhaps even more depressing is that Northeastern has an overall acceptance rate of 7% (Northeastern!!!!), Tulane 10%, Boston University 14%, NYU 12% … what the hell is wrong?!

MIT is the latest school to announce it will carry over testing requirements into the next admissions cycle. Rather than the decision itself, however, it's the reason for the decision that caused a stir in the guidance counselor community this week. MIT says reinstating the test requirements will allow for a fairer admissions process for students who may not have access to advanced or extracurriculars to demonstrate their readiness for MIT. This is a controversial decision because conventional wisdom has long held that standardized tests are sustainable

In admissions because students who have access to paid test prep options and advanced curriculum tend to perform better on these exams.

I tend to agree with MIT on this one: after all, you can't fake a test score (well, unless you're a Rick Singer client!!). Even with expensive tutoring, the student must actually earn points. On the other hand, when school is optional, the "softer" aspects of the admissions process (texts, interview preparation, in-depth study of extracurriculars, letters of recommendation, ED strategies) become much more important. Because they are much easier to manipulate with professional guidance than with test scores, students with structures can have a huge advantage in optional testing situations. We'll have to see if other schools follow MIT in reporting test requirements for the next admissions cycle.

We've blogged about Academic Influence rankings before, and the newest metric the organization uses to rank colleges is something called Academic Stewardship. This number basically calculates how well an institution uses its resources, a ratio of how much it affects the available resources. The result is an interesting list of schools that don't often appear in any well-known rankings: the #1 school for academic leadership is Fisk College, a private HBCU in Nashville.

An increasing number of high school basketball players are bypassing the NBA, college and the NCAA to pursue careers, despite the fact that NCAA athletes can now earn money through the recently approved NCAA "name, image and likeness" contracts. These allow players to profit from advertising, video games and other things while remaining amateur players. For many students, these incentives are too new and untested to justify entering college when they could be paid as full-time players right out of high school. We'll have to see how profitable these NIL trades become to see if they attract top players to the NCAA, though we also believe a college education should have value.
