April 27, 2022 – The Aspen Institute today announced that South Florida State College (SFSC) is among the 25 semifinalists for the Aspen Award. . Community College Excellence adds another milestone to the award selection process. The $1 million Aspen Award is the nation's signature award for community colleges that achieve equitable outcomes for students. In recent years, only 10 finalists have been selected for the winner. The change is meant to highlight the growing number of colleges across the country that are doing great work.
Aspen Award for Teaching and Learning; Certification and degree completion; transfer and success in undergraduate degree; The Aspen Award is presented biennially for workforce achievements and equitable outcomes for students of color and low-income backgrounds. The winner will be announced in the spring of 2023.
"We are excited to see meaningful and measurable progress in America's community colleges, educating and preparing people of all backgrounds for great careers," said Josh Weiner, executive director of the Aspen Institute's College Excellence Program. Graduation rates since 2015 have seen a 6 percent increase for all students and more than a 5 percent increase for students of color. "These 25 colleges represent our dreams for a better country and a restored democracy."
The Japan Studies Program At Laguardia Community College
SFSC President Dr. Thomas C. "The accolade from the Aspen Institute confirms that SFSC is a top-performing college for quality learning initiatives led by outstanding faculty," Litzel said. "Analyzing data collected by Aspen, SFSC outperforms performance indicators in areas such as number of certificates awarded, graduation rate and overall student achievement."
Completion began last October when the Aspen Institute invited applications based on evidence that it strengthens and improves student outcomes in key areas such as transition and equity, the Aspen Institute believes. Applications are submitted to a diverse selection committee of 16 higher education experts who review extensive data and clinical narratives. The committee will then review the leadership teams' interviews and narrow those 25 semifinalists down to 10 finalists to be announced in early June 2022.
The Aspen Institute's College Excellence Program focuses on higher education practices that significantly improve student outcomes, particularly for low-income students and the growing number of students of color at American universities.
