Did you know that the University of Minnesota is considered one of the strongest and most active governance systems among research universities? Faculty, students, and staff throughout the system participate in the governance of the * University Senate. Co-governance gives the diverse voices of the University community the opportunity to participate in discussions and provide input on many of the key issues facing the University.
We are proud to be the only Big 10 institution to include the University of Minnesota's public service, professional and academic (P&A) staff in the governance system of the University Senate. The leadership of the University Senate is also proud of the successful cooperation with the administration and the Board of Regents.

University Senate Governance
University Senate governance at the University of Minnesota has a rich tradition. The umbrella body, the University Senate, was established in 1912 and then consisted only of teaching staff. Academic experts such as students, faculty and staff are added later. The University Senate currently consists of four senates: the Faculty Senate, the Student Senate, the P&A Senate, and the Civil Service Senate.
Most of the work of the Senate is done by committees. Each senate has an executive or advisory committee. There are 23 standing committees and 14 standing sub-committees in five advisory committees. Most of the committees consist of faculty, students, civil servants, P&A and fellows, alumni and tenured members respectively.

The joint management system is defined by the Statute of the University Senate. The powers of the Senate and its committees are defined in each constitution, law and order.
