Kenwood Blvd. It is designed as a gateway to all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) faculties and buildings in the university.

"This new facility will represent a big part of what the Wisconsin idea is," UW System President Tommy Thompson said at the Jan. 26 groundbreaking. "To meet the state's biggest and toughest challenges and, most importantly, to give our students the knowledge and tools they need to succeed."

The design of the new facility was led by a collaboration between CannonDesign and Kahler Slater. VJS Construction Services manages the main contractor.

"Chemistry is at the heart of almost every growing industry, and we know that STEM jobs are growing faster than non-STEM jobs," said UWM Chancellor Mark Mone. "Employers need graduates who have the opportunity to carry out practical research and develop problem-solving skills. We are excited to begin work on a new, state-of-the-art chemistry building that will better prepare our students for the many opportunities that lie ahead."

The current chemical building, located north of the new facility, was completed in 1972. It will be demolished when the new building is completed.

A university report said the department has more than 250 students, 70 PhD students in master's and PhD programs, 18 faculty members, 18 members of academic, technical, administrative staff and 10 postdoctoral fellows and visiting professors.

"The main reason we are excited about the new building is that it will be a state-of-the-art facility," department head Joseph Aldstad said in a UWM report. "We will be able to significantly improve our education, research and outreach missions. We will have new learning spaces for lectures, classes, study groups; new laboratories that integrate teaching and research, with design efficiencies that facilitate collaborative research."

To the northeast of the new building is the Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Complex, which was completed in 2015. The utility infrastructure for the two buildings will be connected to each other. The research center was the first facility in what will become a cluster of new STEM facilities.

University Of Wisconsin–milwaukee

The new chemistry building will be constructed on the site of the most recent Kunkle Center, 2114 E. Kenwood Blvd. The one-story building was demolished in 2014. When it was built in 1958, it was known as Campus Elementary School and housed the university's children's center from 1975 until its demolition. The Lubar Center for Entrepreneurship was built in 2019 on the east side of the grounds, which also houses the university's Welcome Center.

The project has been under development for several years. Monthly design workshops with educators began in early 2018, and the State Building Commission approved the construction of the project in December 2020.

The project is expected to be completed in late 2023 or early 2024. If you want to watch the action, a webcam is available (although it's locked to night vision at the time of publication).

The chemistry building is not the only major construction project on campus. The State Building Commission and the Wisconsin State Legislature have also approved a $41 million project to renovate the sorority. The oldest part of this facility dates back to 1956. J.H. Findorff & Søn led this contract work and HGA led the design. A number of other projects, including an expansion of Klotsche Centrum and an update of the Northwest Quadrant, are underway.
