On a 6-1 vote, with two members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at a meeting Tuesday night.

With the changed schedule, students will have a shorter summer instead of two weeks off during the fall and spring semesters. One week of each semester is a remedial week, which allows students who need academic assistance to receive it.

In the revised 2023-24 calendar, students will begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Thanksgiving is November 22 through November 24. Christmas break for students is from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break is April 1-12 and Holy Week is April 1-5, 2024. 30, 2024.

Other events on the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Friday, October 20 is Make the Weather Day, and January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. "I'm concerned that the short summer will affect the game, the team and the goal," Crane said after the meeting. "I'm sure the district will work on it, but I feel like it's a big deal for us. I voted for it with my conscience."

Crane also said he supports the idea of ​​a modified calendar with only two weeks each year.

"… I'm honestly not sold on the fact that we're going to have two weeks off of this holiday," Crane said. "I think a week will be enough, but the company approved what we voted for and I support the progress."

At the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent Lawrence King said the summer of 2023 will be tough for team practices because there are usually three weekend camps. But team leaders have many options.

Lawrence said the competition is organized by the state, with a system for various schools in South Carolina. He also planned to form a group for a week during the summer and use the downtime for other music camps.

"Yeah, you're used to getting three weeks of music camp in the summer, but what if you could use your free time for a week of music camp and more music camps in the summer?" Lawrence said. "Two weeks of band in the summer and another week in the fall. I say people need to look at things differently and change."

As for the game schedule, Lawrence said the state has set the tournament schedule so it won't be affected too much. Behaviors should be adjusted, especially temperature behaviors and their timing.

"Soccer and other fall sports are definitely (sports) this holiday season," Lawrence said. "It's no different that basketball has an event during the Christmas holiday and baseball and softball have an event during spring break."

Another concern is how good the two-week schedule will be. Crane said he doesn't think a two-week vacation will accomplish their goals, and he's heard feedback from others who feel the same way.

"We can create 30 minutes of engagement every day [of the school year]," Lawrence said. "The 30-minute intervention is a very powerful resource for our students in small groups… If we look at a five-hour day in that intervention period, that's 10 times their school day… So for five days they spend 50 times more than they spend in normal school. "That week of engagement can be 30 minutes of engagement every minute of the school year."

"Everything we do for these students is to help them succeed next time," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot of good things this week. I heard from the school district a few weeks ago that they saw results in a week of intervention."

As for the gate, Lawrence said it should be 30 days and they are working on how to make the 30 days. The opportunities he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer, five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After a year, everything is easier because you have a week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't sound like much, but it gives you more flexibility when planning your summer."

School Board President Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical of the revised calendar, but that many people he interviewed believed it played a role in his decision to vote in favor of it.

"I'm going to vote for it knowing that we're creating a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I apologize for that. But I also don't want to do what a lot of people want to do or for no good reason.

In the meeting in Jan. 25, council members agreed to move to a modified calendar concept, but did not approve the calendar at that time.
