Understanding the dynamics of diseases that contribute to population decline is critical to salmon management and recovery (e.g., Lehman et al., 2020). Ceratonova shasta is a myxozoan parasite that has been the focus of research and management in the Klamath River (USA) due to its effect on the survival rate of juvenile chough and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and O. kisutch, respectively; Fujiwara et al. , 2011; Hallett et al., 2012). The impact of parasites on the salmon community is mainly due to infection in the juvenile stages, where mortality caused by disease can reduce the number of fish. Predicted juvenile mortality in teal and coho can exceed 60% in years when C. shasta density in the water column is high (ie, number of parasites per liter of stream water; Plumb et al., 2019; Som et al., 2019) . The Klamath River is an important example for studying the effects of dams on parasite dynamics and how disease monitoring can inform management actions. In the lower Klamath River, migrating juvenile chum and coho pass through the "infestation zone," an area of high density of C. shasta located at the main point between the confluence of the Shasta and Scott rivers, upstream of the dam. Iron Gate (Hallett). and Bartholomew, 2006; Figure 1). The dam plays an important role in the location of this transmission zone because it restricts the upstream passage of anadromous fish and effectively concentrates spawning, which facilitates host-to-host transmission of parasites.

C. shasta occurs naturally in river systems in the Pacific Northwest of North America. This parasite alternates between two aquatic spore stages, actinospores and myxospores, which infect salmonid (actinospores) and ringworm (myxospores) hosts (Fig. 2; Bartholomew et al., 1997). Actinospores are released into the water from the benthic annelid Manayunkia occidentalis (formerly M. speciosa; Atkinson, Bartholomew & Rouse, 2020), encounter the host fish, invade the gills, enter the circulatory system and spread to intestinal tissue and cause enteronecrosis . , bleeding and ulcers (Bartholomew, 1998; Bjork & Bartholomew, 2010). Infected fish produce myxospores, which in turn are eaten by ringworms. Actinospores develop inside infected annelids and enter the water, where they can encounter another host and complete the life cycle (Bartholomew et al., 1997). Actinospores from the spring can be found in the Klamath River and infect migrating juvenile salmon; released in the fall can encounter and infect adult salmon returning to spawn (Figure 2). The developmental strategy of C. shasta differs between infection in adult and juvenile salmonid hosts; in adults, the release of myxospores occurs after death (ie, after spawning), whereas in smolts and fry, the parasite is released shortly after infection (Kent et al., 2014). Parasites from the carcasses of infected adults are dispersed, where the sediment is overlapped by the habitat of the invertebrate hosts.

The map shows the locations of the six hydroelectric dams (lines), contaminated areas (shaded), the Beaver Creek monitoring site (KBC), and the three ringed plant monitoring sites (circled symbols).

Figure 2. The life cycle of Ceratonova shasta alternates between two sporulation and two host stages, cycling through each phase at different times of the year. The actinospore stage infects vertebrates, local salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.), and the myxospore stage infects invertebrates, the host tissue (Manayunkia occidentalis). Life cycle trend cycles are represented by gray lines and arrows. In spring (year = i), mature actinospores are released into the water column and encounter young migrating salmonids (left loop). Infected juveniles produce myxospores, which are consumed by the host. Infected countries release actinospores in the summer, which are found in adult salmon that return to the river to spawn (right loop). As the fish swim upriver to spawn, they die and release myxospores that can infect scallops. The development of actinospores in ring plants lasts longer in cold water in winter than in summer. Infected annelids produce mature actinospores in the spring of the following year (year = i + 1), and the cycle continues.

Figure 3: Density characteristics of Ceratonova shasta observed in spring. Spore density (spores/L) in spring includes (A) initiation of spore release in ringworms, (B) overall seasonal pattern of spore density (gray line), and (C) maximum seed density. To highlight these features, the black markers shown here are assumed to be seed density values measured at the Beaver Creek monitoring site in 2014.

Fish exposed to high levels of C. shasta are more likely to develop clinical disease (Hallett & Bartholomew, 2012; Ray & Bartholomew, 2013; Ray, Holt & Bartholomew, 2012). Spring-migrating juvenile fish in the lower Klamath River may be exposed to high parasite densities. The density of actinospores varies in time and space according to the life cycle described above (see Fig. 2). As river temperatures increase in the spring, spawning density increases from undetectable to peak levels (see Figure 3 for an example from 2014; see Bartholomew et al., 2020 for spawning monitoring since 2006). The timing of spore formation ("sporing initiation") affects the risk of infection and disease in young salmon.
