Hcde Releases 2022 2023 Comprehensive School Calendar For 25 Harris County Districts

The first day of the 2022-2023 school year will be August 22 based on state law guidance. The calendar was developed in fall 2021 by a committee made up of teachers, parents, community members and staff, according to the district's press release.

Sept. 26, 2022, Oct. 24, 2022, Jan. 13, 2023, Feb. 17, 2023 and April 10, 2023: Teacher work days/school closing days on days that are also student holidays;

Lone Star College-CyFair opens their library for tours to the public, allowing them to learn about the space and win prizes.

The Pop in to Your Library Tours program returns to LSC-CyFair libraries Jan. 24-27, Jan. 31-Feb. 3 and Feb. 7-10. Librarian-led tours will be 30 minutes or less and no registration is required. Participants can meet near the entrance of the LSC-CyFair Technology Building, and have a chance to win.

"These three weeks of introductory tours are provided to help reduce the barriers of library anxiety for students and community patrons," said Liz Nebeker, reference librarian, in a college statement. "The tours cover library resources and services available to help the project succeed in the classroom and community. Come find out 'where to do what' in the library and meet our librarians who 'expert resources' here to serve you."

Franklin Sampson, Cy-Fair ISD director of guidance and counseling, has been elected as the Lone Star State School Counselor Association's office of counselor educator vice president.

"This will be an amazing opportunity and give me the opportunity to continue to give back to others," Sampson said in a statement. "I have made it part of my daily goal to do whatever I can to make an impact in someone's life. Serving in this capacity will help our organization grow to greater heights. There is in my unique position of overseeing nearly 300 school counselors, 19 social workers, four mental health intervention counselors and one substance use counselor. I will use my influence to continue to feed this wonderful organization ."

Cy-Fair ISD had 18 wrestlers win medals during the 19th CFISD Invitational Jan. 7-8, including two individual championships.

Cypress Ranch High School's female wrestlers finished as the top CFISD school, while Cy Ranch's boys had the highest finish among all CFISD teams in the boys' tournament.

Kahla Middle School students and staff held a Bears for the Blue drive, collecting new and used stuffed animals for the CFISD police department and other police departments.

According to the district's press release, 160 stuffed animals were collected, and will be given to children in need.

The drive was planned by Kahla in-class paraprofessional Kelsey Jackson and secretary Dolores Frayler as an opportunity for students to help others. The trip started on January 5 and ended on January 13.

"It's a service project that gives back to the community," Jackson said. "I've talked to some economically disadvantaged kids and hearing them talk about giving their stuffed animals to other people who might be in need is huge. They're getting something in return, but it's not visible. It makes a good deed of service."

CYPRESS — The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the calendar committee's recommendations for the 2021-2022 instructional calendar at its regularly scheduled meeting on Jan. 14, 2021.

State law mandates that instruction for the school year cannot begin before the fourth Monday in August. For the 2021-2022 school year, the earliest start date is August 23—which will serve as the first day of school.

School Calendar Voting

In the fall semester of 2020, a calendar committee was organized to develop a calendar for the 2021-2022 school year. The committee is made up of district-wide representatives, including teachers, parents, community members, campus administrators and support staff. The committee solicited public input online while creating a calendar using the 75,600 minutes needed to complete a school year required by law.

The committee recommended a calendar to the school board that ends the 2021-2022 school year on May 26, 2022.

In its meetings, the committee discussed various aspects of developing teaching calendars before arriving at a consensus.

According to a statement, the approved calendar will begin instruction on Aug. 10 and end instruction on May 25, just before Memorial Day. It allows nine weeks of summer break for teachers and 10 ½ weeks for students.

The calendar provides for five staff development days before school starts and 4 ½ staff development days during the school year.

The holiday structure will remain traditional, with one week for Thanksgiving break, two weeks for winter break and one week for spring break. Spring break will coincide with most area school districts.

In order to comply with the requirements of the Texas Education Agency, 175 student teaching days and 187 teacher contract days are planned, with a minimum of 75,600 operating minutes.

In the case of school cancellations caused by inclement weather, the calendar plans for 1,185 additional minutes of operation, above the TEA minimum requirement of 840 minutes. February 20 and April 10 will serve as additional weather makeup days.
