Gettysburg Academic Calendar 2023

Gettysburg College's student newspaper is calling for the school's mascot, "Bullets," to be replaced, citing recent mass shootings and calling its nickname "scary."

Holy Trinity High School

The editor argued that the name was offensive, even to this generation: "Obviously, the bullet has a historical connection here in Gettysburg, but in many other cities around the country it has a terrible meaning."

The committee listed possible replacement names for the game, including Emancipators, Top Hats, Apples, Eagles and Horses and Buggies.

The article criticizes the name of a campus cafeteria known as the "Bullet hole." According to the committee: "It is objectively disgusting to be in a 'bullet hole.'

Children & Youth

In a statement to the Young America Foundation, John Riccardi, director of Young Americans for Freedom at Gettysburg College, said "efforts to change the mascot are very ambitious." He also linked the movement to the potential phenomenon of changing school mascots: "This article shows the movement on the left to get rid of everything they oppose."

Recently, as reported by The New Guardian, "The George Washington High School Board of Trustees announced in a press release Wednesday morning that the school will be removing its 'Colonials' nickname and mascot for the 2023-2024 school year ." Thus the "pilots" of Gettysburg can still be considered politically incorrect for today's higher education.
