Uf Calendar 2023 19 – UF Parking and Construction: An Apparent Dead End Parking, construction, and road closures on the UF campus continue to cause problems for campus commuters.

Gabriella Winkler drew her own version of the UF parking lot map as her family headed to campus for her graduation on May 1. It was the only way to provide them with the most up-to-date information on new road closures and regularly oversold parking spaces, she said.

The 22-year-old UF graduate knows the struggle for parking on campus. As a student, the parking lot at UF Hospital, or lack thereof, kept Winkler from attending her doctor's appointments. She chose to have her upper respiratory infection treated at an emergency clinic, where she spent more money than she would have if she had found a parking space.

Although parking has been a common setback for students, faculty, and visitors, campus construction since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem. As of May 2, parts of Museumsvejen and its intersection with Gale Lemerand Drive will be closed for the summer.

"I feel like I'm not appreciated even though it's one of the best colleges," Winkler said.

There are four levels of student parking decals: graduate students can park in green spaces, and campus residents can park in red or red spaces. Off-campus students may park in lots near the Southwest Recreation Center.

"Is it worth the risk because they don't care enough about us to accommodate the parking lot for the influx of students they have?" Winkler asked. "It's frustrating. It makes you so angry and you wonder where all that money is going."

Paige Davis, a 21-year-old UF graduate, noted that buses were becoming less and less available as construction began. She rode the bus frequently for three years, but stopped using RTS to get to campus due to its unreliability.

She tried to park at J. Wayne Reitz Union but said she was turned away because the ground floor was closed.

Associate Director of Transportation and Parking Services Ron Fuller said students want to park close to their classes, which isn't possible for everyone.

"We never want that, because we never want a campus where the middle of campus has a lot of parking again," Fuller said.

He said there is adequate parking for off-campus students who want to come to campus, including Park-and-Ride and buses that go to the grounds.

Fuller doesn't think the closures and construction should cause a parking problem for students this fall; he said most of the construction is taking place in the heart of campus, where student parking is minimal.

Kimberly Blum, a 17-year-old freshman, noticed the lack of parking when she first visited campus this year. Blum and her family managed to park at Union Reitz upon arrival, but couldn't park for the rest of the day.

Parking difficulties didn't stop Blum from attending college, as she said UF had plenty of positive opportunities for her.

Despite the prestige of the university, its car parks and road closures remain a problem for students, graduates, and visitors. Many of the current construction projects that result in a lack of reliable and affordable alternatives, such as the one that disrupts Museum Road, will continue through 2023.
