For some Scots, going to university is the next automatic step after high school, and it's not a question of where they go. For others, they are the first in their family to go to college and navigate the "new things" that are passed down through the generations. For some, like our international students, the first step is an endless flight to a campus they may never have seen in person. For others, obstacle after obstacle prevented them from entering the Agnes Scott Class of 2023 — but they did. Regardless of how they got here, these students strive to make Agnes Scott the place to start their next chapter. Their efforts and achievements in high school lead to new opportunities to discover themselves and their world.

Agnes Scott welcomed 300 new Scots for orientation this fall. They came to us from 36 states and 6 countries, and 10 of them continue the Scotty legacy of their previous family members. They are interested in everything from biology/preschool to dance, and our faculty is especially excited that many of them enjoy the opportunity to study the liberal arts and are still undecided on a major.

As one of the Agnes Scott Presidential Scholars, Ruby plans to study public health in hopes of one day becoming a doctor, something she focused on after overcoming her own problems with anxiety and depression. Ruby hosts a weekly public radio program, Sugar, Spice and Everything Good, focusing on youth-oriented feminist topics and interviews with guests. A proud member of her school's Young Democrats club and a video producer for an online newspaper, Ruby won an honorable mention in the national C-SPAN StudentCam competition for her short film on the opioid epidemic in her sophomore year. The talented musician sang, played guitar, bass and keyboards with the Silver Springs House Band at their shows in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
