Uga Calendar Spring 2023 – To be eligible to participate in school commencement during the spring semester, students must have 15 credit hours by the time they complete the degree requirements at the end of the spring semester. No student shall graduate or participate in commencement if a disciplinary proceeding or hearing is pending, or if the associate dean for academic affairs deems such participation inappropriate.
The School recognizes scholastic attainment of true distinction by awarding the degree of Doctor of Laws summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude based on cumulative grade point average.
Uga Calendar Spring 2023

A typical full-time course load is 12 to 18 semester credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and 3 to 8 credit hours in the summer term. A minimum of 12 semester hours must be registered for the semester, but in unusual circumstances, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs may approve a student to take fewer hours. In the final semester of study, enrollment in at least 10 semester credits qualifies for permanent resident status. Please note that enrollment in 10 credit hours cannot be considered full-time for financial aid purposes. Students cannot register for more than 18 hours in the fall or spring semester, or more than 8 hours in the summer term.

Students should expect to spend at least two hours per week on content-related work outside the classroom for each credit hour of instruction. Therefore, for a 3 credit course, students should expect to spend six hours studying each week.

First-year students must register and successfully complete all first-year courses, including the spring elective, in order to continue to the second year. Optional enrollment or withdrawal from the first year of courses is not permitted.
This course covers the life cycle of a case in federal court, including the scope and nature of the federal courts' constitutional and statutory authority to decide cases. Topics include statutory and constitutional limits on a court's authority to enter judgment against a defendant, subject matter jurisdiction, venue, pleadings, affidavits, discovery, summary judgment, pre-trial and post-trial motions, and the exclusive effect of final judgments. The course also covers elections, separation of powers, federalism, forum shopping, and interpretation of rules, statutes and constitutional texts.

This course examines the meaning and impact of the United States Constitution, particularly regarding federalism, separation of powers, judicial function, and due process.
Contracts provide an introduction to legally enforceable promises under Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) and common law. Among the topics covered are the acceptance and consideration of the offer; formalities and promissory estoppel; the rule of evidence and the statute of frauds; enforcement by a third party; material breach of contract; and damage. Students are expected to be able to explain in writing how these and other legal issues under the UCC and common law apply to a variety of complex factual situations.

This course examines the historical development of crime, as well as an analysis of the basic elements of crime and a consideration of the main classes of crime.

It covers intentional crimes, including assault, battery and possibly false imprisonment, trespassing and more. Certain intentional tort defenses, such as consent and self-defense, may also be covered. Much of the course is devoted to the tort of negligence, including the subject of the duty of reasonable care, issues of whether the defendant breached that duty, the requirement that the plaintiff establish a causal link between the harm and the damage caused for the plaintiff. . , and limitations on immediate causes of liability.
Provides students with sources and strategies for basic legal research including locating cases, statutes, regulations and secondary authorities.

Uga New Student Orientation
It introduces the process of legal analysis and reasoning and teaches students to produce written documents in a style and format appropriate for audience and purpose, with an emphasis on objective analysis and writing.
Develops advanced legal analysis and reasoning skills in the context of objective analysis and legal argument. The students will produce written documents in a style and format suitable for the audience and the purpose. Basic concepts, conventions and formats for drafting legal documents are also covered.

Legal Writing II students are expected to compete in the preliminary rounds of oral arguments used to determine participants in the 1L Moot Court competition.

This course deals with the ethical and legal principles governing the legal profession. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, the attorney-client relationship, duty of confidentiality, attorney-client privilege, conflicts of interest, ethics in representation, ethical issues in organizational client representation, admission to practice, d 'professional recognition. , and advertising and solicitation. Particular emphasis was placed on the Model Rules for Professional Conduct and the Reform of the Governance Years.
All students must successfully complete both the 2L writing requirement and the Capstone writing requirement. Before completing the second year, students must complete one semester of coursework (for at least two credit hours) designated as meeting the criteria for the 2L Writing Requirement.

The Capstone Writing Requirement requires all students, prior to graduation, to complete an additional analytical writing project of at least 20 double-spaced pages. The project, which can consist of a single piece of writing or a series of shorter texts on related topics, must meet the following criteria:
Students selected for the Georgia Review, Georgia Journal of International & Comparative, Journal of Intellectual Property, or Georgia Criminal Review may receive two credit hours without written evaluation after attending editorial board responsibilities as determined by each journal board, in consultation with their adviser. (s). All credit award decisions are subject to final approval by the faculty journal advisor(s).

Students may not receive more than four credit hours of total points combined for competition toward degree requirements.

A student may receive no more than 4 total credit hours for the J.D. degree for any combination of supervised research and independent project. No more than two hours of supervised research or independent project credit or any combination thereof may be earned in any semester without the approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Supervised research and independent project assignments must be completed by the end of the semester for which credit is claimed. Occasionally, additional time may be required after the semester. In such cases, the professor may enter a grade of I (incomplete) and grant an extension of one semester to complete the work. After one semester, a grade of I will convert to an F. To enroll in supervised research or an independent project, a student must obtain a form from the school registrar that must be filled out by the student and signed by the supervising professor. After returning the form to the Registrar, the student registers in Athena at http://athena.uga.edu for the appropriate course: Supervised Research (JURI 5190) or Independent Project (JURI 5510).

Supervised research, JURI 5190 (2 credits), involves a detailed written analysis of a legal issue under close faculty supervision. It requires significant legal research and original thinking and analysis. Students must produce a final paper that is similar in type and quality to that found in the review articles. Completion of this course must include the following: (1) a description of the content and scope of the thesis; (2) an overview of about two pages; (3) a detailed overview with citations of each key point, including a preliminary bibliographic list of all sources searched up to this point; (4) a draft of the text together with a bibliography of the sources consulted, regardless of whether they are mentioned in the text or not; and (5) final paper including footnotes.
Supervised research may not involve material that the student has researched or has significantly researched in another context such as law journals, litigation, paid research, office work, or previous seminars. The student is free to use the completed project in any way the student wishes.

Georgia Spring Break Destinations
A professor will not supervise research outside his area of expertise, unless there is a faculty member with that expertise. Typically, supervised research is not conducted on material covered by the seminar currently being offered. A professor cannot, except in extraordinary circumstances, supervise more than 7 students per academic year in supervised research. No faculty member may evaluate a supervised research paper if the work was first supervised by another staff member, except in unusual circumstances with the approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Work in Supervised Research should generally be supervised by a member of staff. In rare cases, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs may authorize an adjunct or visiting professor to supervise such work.

The professor must approve the thesis report before registering for Supervised Research. Once the project is approved and the student is enrolled, the remaining steps must be completed according to the schedule determined by the faculty member.
