Conroe ISD families can start planning next year when the 2021-22 academic calendar is officially decided.

After months of negotiations, several proposals and comments from the community, the CISD Board of Trustees officially approved next year's academic calendar at its January meeting. The District Level Planning Committee and the Decision Making Committee presented a version of the C1 calendar to the council, which was unanimously approved by the council.

The first semester for students will start from August 11 and end on December 17. The second semester begins on January 5, 2022 and ends on May 26, 2022.

As 2021 is not an election year, there will be no student holidays on election day in November. Instead, there will be a four-day holiday in April. Even years later, making Election Day a student holiday can be a common district practice.

The calendar process began in October with discussions that began at committee level. In November, the calendar process was presented to the board or feedback was received. In the same month, the committees conducted a survey of the board and produced several draft calendars.

The Innovation District was approved at the December board meeting, allowing CISD to begin the school year by August 23rd.

At the November board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Chris Hines presented administrators with community feedback obtained through a district survey.

"We know our calendars have an impact on families, they really look at it to make their schedules," Hines said, noting that many private schools in the county and area also use it to make their own schedules.

The district has been conducting a community survey about the calendar for two years now, and the responses and results have helped shape each school year. Last year, the survey collected almost 4,000 responses. This year's survey garnered nearly 9,500 responses, more than double that number. This year, the district included eight projects in a survey for community members to better see what each option would look like.

The survey found that families prefer a mid-week start (57 percent of respondents in the 2020 survey liked it), Thanksgiving weekend (85 percent liked it) and winter holidays. three weekends (75 percent like it). ) However, the district has found that shorter weeks (three days or less) can make attendance more difficult.

The balanced semester remains a subject of much debate. According to Hines' presentation, it was the number one priority for some survey respondents, though not at the top overall. Hines said upperclassmen especially felt the imbalanced semesters. Starting out as an innovation district allowed the district to achieve this balance.
