The George Washington University School of Law recommends the study of law and the practice of law for anyone who chooses to earn a doctorate in jurisprudence. The law school prioritizes its students by providing them with the essential tools for success.

However, such a description mentioned is an inaccurate description of the black student's experience. As students of black law, in a predominantly white institution, our legal, educational, and professional experience is flawed by discrimination. Therefore, in an effort to carefully ensure equality and inclusion, we, the League of Black Law Students, encourage the Law School to act quickly to meet the following requirements.

One. Currently, GW Law states that this class will provide students with: "Overview of the criminal justice system. Crime problem aspects and objectives of criminal penalties. Examine what behavior should be considered a crime and the penalties that should be imposed. Theoretical anatomy of criminal offenses (criminal intent and action elements). criminal), general principles of criminal responsibility, and various defenses. However, educating the criminal justice system, without the influence or influence of race, means ignoring the infrastructure and means of stabilizing the criminal justice system. One. GW Law prides itself on providing its students with a solid legal education. However, with over 275 law elective classes, GW offers only (2) dual-credit courses in Race and Law: Race and Slavery Law, Racism, and American Law. As systemic racism permeates every institutional system, the BLSA advocates making GW electives available immediately. The BLSA requires the Law School to immediately offer a three-credit course for this academic year in Spring 2021. Additionally, the BLSA requires that the school's curriculum continue to evolve, so a minimum of 5-7. Race-focused classes are offered. and legislation in 2023.

Campus School Calendar

One. The George Washington University School of Law offers its students a wonderful opportunity to interact and learn from the only black Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Clarence Thomas. Due to demand, the law school implements the system of registration in the form of a lottery. However, the lottery system has a different effect on Black GW Law students because black students represent a low percentage of GW Law students. The current lottery system limits diversity and prevents black students from competing with the only black judge. As a result, the BLSA requires that a percentage of class space be immediately allocated to African American/Black students, and this will be reflected in the upcoming 2020-2021 academic year.

One. The BLSA has asked the law school to add another clinic that advocates for people who have experienced racial injustice. Now, members of the outside black community are speaking out and uniting to stop the unjustified killings of black men and women. However, it is essential that whites understand that blacks suffer grievances that go beyond confrontations with the police. GW Law is committed to providing its students with clinical guidance, to prevent individuals from recognizing and understanding racial inequality only in the context of criminal law. The BLSA therefore requires that GW provide its students with clinical learning opportunities that show that systemic racism is enshrined in every American educational institution, such as the health care system, the housing system, the voting system, and the education system. This clinic can be involved in important work with organizations such as the NAACP to represent, advocate, and protect victims of civil rights violations. This clinic should seek student participation using the GW Law Clinic registration and interview process, with different applicants maintaining student participation rates. The BLSA requires that this clinic have a mandatory requirement for a chapter that provides instructions about race and the law. The BLSA requires this clinic to be established no later than 2021.

One. This clinic employs approximately 8 students as student attorneys, to provide written and oral defense on behalf of clients convicted of criminal offences. Because of our racist criminal justice system, most, if not all, of our clinic's clients are black. The BLSA requires a retention of the proportion of student attorneys selected for Black GW Law students. Of great importance to the educational value of this clinic is to ensure that Black GW Law students attend a clinic that has the majority, if not all, of its black clients. Without the voice of black students, seminar talks and clinical learning experiences would be limited. In addition, Black GW Law students are committed and interested in participating in such clinics but are not consistently selected as student attorneys. For example, for the upcoming clinical year, only 1 black student will be selected as a student attorney, and 5 black students will be placed on a waiting list. One is not enough. The BLSA requires that diversity among student lawyers be improved immediately, with 1-2 more black students becoming student lawyers in the upcoming clinical year, 2020-2021.

The BLSA requires effective diversity increase immediately, so that 1-2 black students are accepted into the 2020 semester.

One. GW Law has 9 academic law journals that enable students to develop and improve their critical research and writing skills. Currently, there are not enough Black GW Law students in such journals, and the BLSA requires all journals to request diversity data for consideration. Discriminatory practices are clear and illustrated in the history of GW's law. The law school was founded in 1865, but it wasn't until 2019 that he was the first black editor-in-chief of the GW Law Review and GW Federal Communications Law Journal. The BLSA advocates greater diversity and is reflected in student membership in the upcoming 2022 class.

One. GW Law has 4 skill boards: the Alternative Dispute Resolution Board, the Fraud Trial Committee, the Judicial Court Board, and the Student Animal Welfare Trust. The BLSA advocates for an increase in the number of black student members. Unfortunately, many Black GW Law students have experienced explicit and implicit racism when attempting to join these skill boards, whether through feedback and comments from judges, comments and suggestions, instructor advice, or teacher comments. Black GW Law students remain a marginalized and marginalized group. An independent oversight board is needed, as these abuses against Black GW Law students have gone unchecked and unnoticed. The BLSA requires all skill boards to increase black student membership and conduct racial bias training.

Introducing The Class Of 2025

One. Many colleges and universities have or are in the process of appointing associate deans for diversity and inclusion. The purpose of this position is to recruit an individual with proven experience and vision in promoting and enhancing diversity for all faculty and learners. The BLSA requires GW to appoint an Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion who will be responsible no later than Fall 2021.

One. Together with the university's Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, BLSA has asked GW Law to develop a diversity-focused curriculum that all students must complete at the beginning of each academic year. The BLSA requires that this training be immediate and that students commit to fighting racism.

One. Law schools must publicly disclose how many students are considered diverse students, students of color, and/or African American/Black students to ensure their commitment and responsibility to an inclusive, diverse legal community. The BLSA requires these numbers to be released immediately and by early 2021 at the latest.

When Is Washington's Birthday 2023?

One. According to the college's description of GW Law, the school currently has 75 full-time faculty members. Of the 75 people, only 8 were members of the black community. The BLSA is asking the school to hire more black full-time employees. It is alarming that only 10% of full-time faculty members are racially and culturally accessible and connect with black law students at GW. 10% is no longer the record – hopefully it will meet GW's share.
