Umc Lectionary Calendar 2023

Umc Lectionary Calendar 2023 – 2021-2022 The 2018 UCA Lectionary, which has been available for sale on MediaCom Education for the past few months, is now available for free download below. Each year, the UCA publishes a booklet that lists the Lectionary readings for the upcoming Church year, as well as information on relevant books, online resources, podcasts, and publications that may be helpful to those who preach from the Lectionary.

For the past several years, I have been working with MediaCom to edit the Lectionary Booklet, a task that intersects with my involvement with Transforming Worship Circle. The Lectionary allows preachers to maintain the discipline of engaging with the full breadth of Scripture, rather than falling into the trap of preaching only on favorite passages and topics. In many congregations with a large number of ministers, the use of conferences provides some consistency each week.

Many lesson materials and resources are available online, including several listed in the brochure. These days I'm turning more and more to excellent lectionary podcasts. Many will also be familiar with The Love of the World, a helpful lecture-based devotional I use regularly and occasionally contribute to, which now has a handy app for Apple or Android devices. The Revised Common Lectionary is a collection of scripture readings used in Protestant Christian worship that anticipates the liturgical year with its pattern of feasts and seasons. It was publicly announced in 1994. It was preceded by the Common Lectionary compiled in 1983, which was preceded by the COCU Lectionary published in 1974 by the Consulta on Union of Churches (COCU). This lectionary is derived from several Protestant lectionaries currently in use, which in turn were based on the 1969 Ordo Lectionum Missae, the triennial lectionary of the Roman Catholic Church after the Vatican II reforms.

As in its predecessors, each Sunday has specific readings: a passage from the Old Testament or the Acts of the Apostles; a passage from one of the psalms; others from the Epistles or Apocalypse; and finally a passage from one of the four Gospels.

Also, like its predecessors, it operates in three-year cycles; The Gospel readings in the first year (Year A) are taken from the Gospel according to Matthew, in the second year (or Year B) from the Gospel according to Mark, and in the third year (or Year C) they come from the Gospel. the gospel according to Luke. Portions of the Gospel of John are read during Easter and used during other liturgical seasons, including Advent, Christmas, and Lent when appropriate. With the beginning of Advent on November 28, we move into year C.
