Uvm 2023 Calendar – Binge drinking among Vermont high school teens, for example, doubles the odds of making a suicide plan, according to a spring report by Rachel Danis and her team in the PH392 project experience course.

Danis, who graduated with a master's degree in public health in May, was part of a team researching "Adolescent Alcohol Use in Vermont: A Comprehensive Study of Alcohol Consumption and Its Relationship to Suicide."

The aim of this study was to better understand the current state of adolescent alcohol use in Vermont and its relationship to increased suicidal thoughts and attempts among the state's youth.

"I think one of the most surprising things we found about youth alcohol use in Vermont was how young people started drinking," said Danis.

In the PH392 Learning Experience Project, a five-credit course, students spend two semesters exploring specific topics such as binge drinking, suicidal ideation, health use, and e-cigarette use. They use datasets that are nationally representative and specific to Vermont to run their projects.

Students are divided into groups to make visual information posters and video presentations. Students also complete a manuscript for submission to the American Journal of Public Health.

Larner College of Medicine Assistant Professor Thomas Delaney, PhD, teaches in the Master's program in Public Health and serves as faculty advisor for PH392. He said the course aims to help students improve their collaboration and communication skills and become better researchers. After the course, students will receive one credit for practicum experience.

"We want them to learn how to analyze data," Delaney said. "This course is about research and epidemiology, and ultimately we want to shape student work to inform programs and policies."

The student team consults with faculty advisors and other co-authors throughout the course, and each student is assigned a role on their team, such as project manager, lead analyst, and data analyst manager.

Using data from the Vermont Department of Health's Youth Risk Management Survey and the Centers for Disease Control, Danis and his colleagues found that between 2007 and 2017, the number of teens planning or attempting suicide increased significantly, as did teen alcohol use. usage occurred in 2015-2017.

"We were surprised by the communication we got," said Danis, who is the team's lead analyst. "We also received information that living in the village makes it easier to access alcohol.

Danis hopes the Adolescent Alcohol Use Report will help better inform the national conversation about substance abuse, mental health policies and interventions. Her group's work also aims to inform future directions for researchers to follow regarding adolescent alcohol use and its relationship to suicide.
