As the Mean Greens prepare for their final year in Conference USA, the department comes off the back of great success both in competition and in the classroom. UNT recorded the best semester in department history with a GPA of 3.206 in spring 2022 and its sixth consecutive semester with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Additionally, UNT has the best winning percentage in the modern sports department for the 2021-22 academic year. North Texas won three Conference USA championships that year, including its third straight men's basketball and softball championships and its second straight women's golf championship. Nine different programs made the playoffs.

"This is an exciting time for North Texas, and we look forward to the challenge of joining the All-Americans next fall," UNT's vice president and director of athletics.

The Mean Green has previously been accepted into The American for October 21, 2021, but no start date has been set. The affiliation date comes after the conference reached an agreement with three of its outgoing schools — UCF, Cincinnati and Houston — to end their conference membership on June 30, 2023.

Founded in 1890, with more than 42,000 students, UNT is a Carnegie-level public research university. In sports, the Mean Green have won 139 all-time championships in 16 different sports.

"We are very excited and excited to welcome our newest members to the 2023 conference as we begin our second decade," Aresco said. "Our incoming schools are a special group whose attributes enhance our Power 6 conference goals. We've seen the investment and dedication these institutions are making to prepare for the American competition, and along with our established institutions, as part of a bright future, the convention will ensure years of championship-level competition built on the extraordinary legacy of the past decade.

Five other new members will join UNT at the same time, including UAB, UTSA, Rice, Charlotte and FAU. The six colleges will join East Carolina, Memphis, Navy (football only), South Florida, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State (basketball and Olympic sports only) — adding 15 U.S. schools to the membership starting in 2023 – 24 academic years. The Americans will play in leagues with 14 teams in football, men's and women's basketball.

American appears in 4 of the top 10, 7 of the 25 and 12 of the top 51 Nielsen Media Market. The league will have four teams from Texas, two from Florida and North Carolina, and one each from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Oklahoma and Kansas.
